It’s a crying shame that there was no Bobby to be heard but honestly it gives you a different perspective of some of the songs in an odd way. I know there’s a lot of background things going on in this show, but purely based on music, the first half is so funky and honestly i really like it. That Peggy-O is one of my favourites. Definitely doesn’t deserve the hate it’s gotten.

People need to understand context.
In the UK they flushed their Cocaine down the toilet.
They switched to LSD.
Jerry asked Ned to stay on stage after Seastones.
Keith had a hissy fit and left the stage.
Ned had to fill in the whole second set.
He did a great job!

I saw the word "trainwreck" used below.
And the word "lackluster".
So here you are, folks.
A lackluster trainwreck.
Or a diamond turning into dust.
I went outside and had a smoke in the middle of Sugar Mag, came back and they still hadn't gotten to the Sunshine Daydream part. My chest was shredded by Billy's machine gun while Donna screamed.
Where is the mix where you can hear Weir's guitar?

Another somewhat lackluster performance is saved by a few rather compelling passages. An unspectacular first set climaxes with a well played but dark and edgey 17 minute performance of Eyes of the World that features a thrashing Garcia solo and some sinister Lesh ordinance, prior to an eerie segue into China Doll. Not that it's my thing, but the Phil and Ned segment, with participation from Garcia, just might be the best ever Seastones ever performed. The following Playin' in the Band (with Lagin sitting in), is one of the highlights of the tour (in spite of some horrendous vocals by Donna). It's an epic performance of the song, that includes two drum breaks. Ned Lagin sits in for the remainder of the performance that features a 17 minute performance of Morning Dew. Several reviewers that I respect have given this show rather strong reviews. In deference to them I'll give this a score of 91 pts, but I'm thinking this is too generous. (91 pts)

this performance is miles ahead of the previous night. i particularly like the Eyes Of The World - there are some beautiful, unique, and jazzy passages in this one. Not the best of the year by any means, but a very satisfying version, if you can dig a more mellow, Garcia driven performance.
There are some other nice cuts too, like Deal, however, i wouldn't call any show from this tour (9/18 being the exception) great exactly. Morning Dew is a train-wreck.
stick with winterland 2/22-24 and May-August for the best of '74...

Subject: SBD tapes were usually sound reinforcement mixes.
Subject: SBD tapes were usually sound reinforcement mixes.
The thing you need to understand is that, unless they were recording for a live album, the sbd mix wasn't meant to be used for later listening - it was used to reinforce the sound of the PA and properly mix the sound in the hall for the audience.
Therefore if Weir was louder on stage he would be quieter on the sbd feed and vice versa.
Unless a mix specifically meant for later listening was created then most sbd tapes will be far from perfect recordings. That's why the Betty boards sound so good - she was using a seperate mix she made just for recording.

My god. This is what it was/is all about. Jerry and Phil as not only a representation of America, but a beautiful example of what at the time was a new form of music. My only critizism is where the FUCK is Wier. The mix is not good, as a previous reviewer stated Jerry L Phil R cool but WHERE THE FUCK IS THE RYTHM guitar. I think Healy should take note (if he is the mixer iam going by what the earlier guy said) that historically its kinda fucked up.
Anyway; ironically i enjoy this because as a result of the Wier Ghost phenom. it kinda sounds like Phil and Jerry playing in someone's basement just for the fuck of it.
Worth a few listens, sorry for th low score but
I tend to enjoy The Grateful Dead with all members included. (Even Wier).

Terrific show - 5*****
Odd pan - Godchaux hard R, Jerry guitar hard L, but it's listenable.
Bobby's rhythm guitar almost completely absent. Bummer. You can pick it out at at start of Row Jimmy, but it's soon buried in the mix like so many Healy shows. Pity... :-(

And fine playing by the whole band throughout the show, even if less maenadic than they could sometimes be at their familiar US venues.
The Seastones is special: it begins like other performances with Phil and Ned, but after a while they pass the baton to Jerry, Keith and Bill who continue the calm spacey improvisation.

Subject: well worth the listen
The "sound" of this show typifies '74---ever notice how each year has a fairly distinctive "sound"? Most of us can listen to any show without knowing the exact year & pin it down.
Anyway, this is worth listening to regardless of what your favorite year is. Everyone is clearly heard---especially Phil. Morning Dew seemed to have a kinda shaky start, but turned into a head blaster. I LOVE the last third of the song where Jerry comes in so quiet and builds up to the explosion that Moring Dew can sometimes end with.
5 STARS for sound & the show. And remmeber, it's ALL in how the music makes YOU FEEL!!!

Way down in the south of France all the ladies love to dance
kick their heels up in the air snap their fingers for romance
While the gentlemen compare blonde or black or auburn hair
check the motion and the style Oh, you know they take their while
Hey, to make the motion more complete, yeah, to make it more a treat
Club D'Jour is where to go come on down and see the show
When the rhythm's really right you can burn it down tonight
when the singing's really fine sweet as Spanish sherry wine
When the club can't contain the beat it just rolls out in the street
spills on down the avenue bringing dancers to their feet.
When it's good as it can be it gets better wait and see
oh, these folks don't ever sleep till they're passed out in the street
Way down in the south of France all the ladies love to dance
clap their hands and walk on air, yeah, the feeling's really there
won't you take a little taste raise it to your charming face?
When the rhythm's really right you can burn it down tonight

Go on take a chance, the ladies do love to dance.

This is a killer show. Phil is smokin throughout. The set list is missing (after Me & my Uncle) Deal, The Race is On, a funky Loose Lucy and El Paso. Phil is just trickin during Eyes and the bass in Morning Dew is unreal. My opinion is best Dew I've heard as far as Phil goes. The bombs are astounding. The whole show really is a testement to what makes Phil different than all the rest. Can anyone say "lead" bass. To bad this show had to happen in France. 5 stars all around. The energy, the sound, the set list and a great mix. I guess its pretty easy to tell I like this show. Just listen and Smile, Smile, Smile!

I'm surprised I'm first to write on this but kudos to Charlie Miller for another great transfer and posting. One reel generation gives a minimal background hiss which is perfectly acceptable: It wouldn't bother me on a Dick's Picks and it doesn't disturb me here. Nice stereo seperation of the instruments and sonic imaging. The playing is laid back and languid in a joyous Dead kinda way. Peggy O slides along like a row boat ride on a slow moving water. Love the Eyes intro. with Billy K. Enjoy this kiddies, it's another '74 gem.
